As they walked across the valley, Jesus went on telling His followers more and more, “I am the true vine and My Father is the gardener. He takes away branches with no fruit and throws them in the fire. And branches with fruit are cut back to produce even more fruit.
“A branch cut away from the vine can’t bear fruit by itself, so you can’t bear fruit either unless you stay in Me. Stay in Me, and I will stay in you. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you stay in Me, then I’ll stay in you, and you will bear much fruit. But cut off from Me, you can’t do anything! My Father is honored by you bearing much fruit because that shows that you are My followers.”
Have you ever picked a beautiful flower growing outside? What happens when you bring it inside and lay it on the table? Yep — withering and shriveling. The flower isn’t attached to its “vine” (its stem and roots). The vine is where it gets its food and water. So if it’s disconnected from the vine, it dies.
And just like an apple tree branch grows apples, a person attached to Jesus, will have a heart that grows things like love, joy, peace, patience, kindness and self-control. All that good Jesus kind of fruit will be blooming in them and changing them. And the fruit they grow is full of more good seeds that make new life sprout up all around them for other people too. That’s the way Jesus’ Life can keep growing and growing.
“Just as Daddy has loved Me, I have also loved you. Stay snuggled up close, right in the middle of My love. If you obey My commandments, you’ll stay in My love, just as I have obeyed My Dad’s commandments and stay in His love. I’ve told you these things so that you will have My joy — joy filled up to the top.
“So here’s My commandment… Ready? Love one another just like I have loved you. There’s no bigger love than this — laying down your life for your friends.
“And you’re My friends if you do what I command you. I’ve called you friends because I have revealed to you everything I heard from My Father. You didn’t choose Me, but I chose you and appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last. So that whatever you ask the Father in My name, He will give you. Again, I’m telling you — love one another.
“And if the world hates you, remember that it hated Me first. If you belonged to the world, the world would love you. But you don’t belong to the world, because I picked you out of the world, so the world hates you.
“You aren’t better than Me. If they hurt Me, they’ll hurt you too. But if they obeyed My word, they’ll obey yours too. So, yeah, this will all happen to you, too, because of Me.
“Things aren’t always going to be easy. People will kick you out on to the street. They’ll even kill you and think they’re doing God a favor. But they don’t know Me or My Father — that’s why they’ll do those things. Don’t forget, so that when the time comes for all this to happen, you’ll remember that I already told you it was gonna happen, so there’s no reason to be surprised or taken off guard. That’s why I’m telling you now.”
