Despite King Jehoshaphat’s boo-boo by buddying up with wicked King Ahab, Jehoshaphat wanted to stay on track and seek God. So he traveled among the people of Judah and reminded them to turn back to God. He set up judges to try to help and give justice to the people.
Then an enemy came to fight against the Kingdom of Judah and King Jehoshaphat. And not just one enemy, but 3 enemies teamed up together against them! This made Jehoshaphat afraid. He knew there was only one thing to do — turn his face to God and ask for His Help!
King Jehoshaphat called everyone in the kingdom together. The daddies came, the mommies came, the children came, and even the babies came. Everyone came from all the cities of Judah. That day, everyone stopped eating so they could focus on praying to God together.
While they all stood in front of the Temple, King Jehoshaphat called out to God, “O Lord, You are the God who lives in Heaven and rules over all the kingdoms of the world. You are so strong and powerful that no one can stand against You! You drove out the people who lived in this land before us, and then You gave a permanent home to the children of Your friend Abraham. They built You a House here, the Temple, to honor You. And now when we call on Your name, we know You will answer us! Please help us. We don’t know what to do, but we are going to fix our eyes on You, on You, on YOU!”
Everyone was there asking and waiting for God to help. The daddies were there. The mommies were there. The children were there. And even the babies were there. Together before God, fixing their eyes on Him.
Suddenly, God’s Spirit came on one of the men who was there. The prophet said, “This is what the Lord says: ‘Don’t be afraid and don’t panic, even though this army is way bigger than you. The battle is the Lord’s, not yours! March, march, march toward them tomorrow, but you won’t be the one fighting this battle. Stand ready and watch the Lord fight for you!’ Don’t be afraid — the Lord is with you!”
At this, King Jehoshaphat bowed down with his face on the ground before God. The daddies bowed. The mommies bowed. The children bowed. And even the babies bowed too. ALL Judah bowed down with Jehoshaphat and worshipped God.
The next day, the warriors put on their fighting gear. They didn’t know how they were going to win, but they were going to follow God’s direction and march, march, march out toward the enemy.
King Jehoshaphat encouraged everyone, “Trust in God and you’ll be safe!” Then Jehoshaphat and the people decided they should send some musicians along with the soldiers to praise, praise, praise God’s majestic splendor all along the way.
As the army march, march, marched, they sang, “Give thanks to the Lord, His love endures forever! Give thanks, thanks to the Lord! His steadfast love, it never ends!”
As the army march, march, marched, they sang:
“Give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever! Oh, give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever! Oh, give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever! Oh, give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever!”
Well, the warriors and singers didn’t know it then, but as soon as they started singin’, God started getting rid of all those enemies for them! Remember how we told you there were three enemies coming together to fight against them? Well, the enemies started fighting each other!
While Jehoshaphat’s army sang to God, before they’d even gotten to the battlefield, God defeated their enemies! By the time Jehoshaphat’s soldiers showed up at the battlefield, there was nothing left to do but collect the plunder the enemies had left behind!
When Jehoshaphat led the army home, they were joyfully singin’ again to the sound of strings and trumpets. God had given them reason to rejoice, rejoice, rejoice over their enemies! God was their Victory! And He had given their land peace.
Give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever (His steadfast love, it never ends) Oh give thanks to the Lord His love endures forever (His steadfast love, it never ends) Oh, give thanks
