Fight for the Faith : A Letter From Jude

Jude also wrote a letter to followers of Jesus. His letter started by saying...

“This letter is to all those who are called by God and wrapped up in His Love and kept special for Jesus, the One with oil on His life. May His mercy and grace and love be poured out ALL over you!”

(Wow! Isn’t that a great way for a letter to start? Yeah... I like it too.)

Jude continued, “My dear friends, I really wanted to write you a letter about God’s amazing, saving power at work in our lives! But I have something else I need to write to you about instead. I have to ask you to fight for the faith! Some yucky men have sneaked in amongst God’s Family! These godless pretenders are saying horrible things like, ‘God treats us better than we deserve, so it’s okay to do bad.’ They even say we don’t have to obey Jesus as our only Master and Lord. Ohhhhh... bad trouble.

“Even though you know all these facts, I must remind you that the Lord, after having saved the people out of the land of Egypt, later destroyed the people who didn’t believe. And everyone knows what happened to Sodom and Gomorrah because of their sins.

“Yet knowing that, these yucky men are now dirtying their own bodies, rejecting leadership and authority and even criticizing angels. They slander and badmouth anything they don’t understand. The only thing they do understand is animal flesh stuff, which is destroying them.

“They have taken the road of Cain! They have greedily rushed after money like Balaam. So they will be eaten by the ground like Korah because of their rebellious disrespect.

“These people are like dirty blobs of stain at your parties, eating with you without even feeling guilty or uncomfortable about it. They are shepherds who feed only themselves. (Which is bad and not being a shepherd at all, huh?)

“They are clouds without rain, just blown along by the wind.

“They are autumn trees, without fruit and uprooted — twice dead.

“They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame.

“Enoch talked about these guys long ago when he said, ‘See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of His holy ones to judge everyone. He will punish all those ungodly people for all the evil things they have done and for every evil thing they have ever said about Him.’

“These people are always grumbling, grumbling, grumbling and always looking for others’ faults. (That’s terrible, huh? That’s not love. Paul and John warned us about these people who don’t love.)

“They follow whatever their selfish-self wants. They boast and brag about themselves. And then they use flowy, flowery, flattering words to try to snag others in the same terrible traps.

“They try to turn people against each other and keep them from loving. They love the world’s stuff. They are empty of God’s Spirit.”

Did you know?

These people Jude is describing sound like baaaaad news, don’t they? They hurt people by trying to keep people from having a close relationship with God and His Family. Did you know there are people like this today, too? There will probably always be people like this on earth. They pretend to belong to God’s Family, but they don’t obey the teachings of Jesus.

People who don’t love their brothers and sisters, like Cain — baaaaad news! People who pretend to serve God but are really greedy for money, like Balaam — baaaaad news! People who think there is nothing special about God’s Chosen leaders, so they want to be their own boss, like Korah — baaaaad news! So even these days we have to pay attention to what Jude warned about, and stand up for what God says by “fighting for the faith.”

“But you, dear friends, Build yourselves up in a faith that is other, other, other! Pray in the Holy Spirit! Stay in the love of God, while looking forward to Jesus’ mercy that brings forever life. Have mercy on those whose feet are wobbly. Save others by snatching them out of the fire.”

After Jude tells God’s Family to stand up for Faith and for God, he ends his letter with another wonder-full and wow-some sentence. He wrote, “Now, to HIM who is able to keep you from falling, and to cause you to stand in His glorious presence, rejoicing, happy, without spots or stains, to Him the only God, our Rescuer through Jesus Christ our Lord, to Him be glory, majesty, power, and authority, before all time, and now, and forever. Amen! Yes! Let it be SO!”
