Jeremiah’s Letter : A Message to God’s Children in Babylon

Jeremiah, God’s prophet, lived in Jerusalem. He had not been taken away to Babylon, but a lot of other people had. Many of God’s Children were living in Babylon as discipline. But God did not forget about them.

God told Jeremiah to write a letter and send it to the people who had been taken away. God’s letter was to tell His Children HOW He wanted them to respond to their discipline. He didn’t want them kicking and screaming and throwing a fit, and He didn’t want them giving up and thinking, “Poor me. It’s too hard. God will never be happy with us again.”

God wanted to give His Children Hope. He wanted to let them know He still loved them and was still watch, watch, watching out for them. So He had Jeremiah send them this letter:

To God’s Children who are living in Babylon, God says, “Don’t just try to get out of Babylon as fast as you can. Don’t think, ‘Let’s try to hurry up and get our punishment over with.’ No. You need to be soft and take your discipline. Don’t have a bad attitude about this. I want you to stay in Babylon and build houses and have children. Multiply! Grow strong! Don’t fight against the Babylonians and treat them unkindly. I want you to look for ways to be helpful in Babylon, and pray for Babylon to prosper and be a peaceful city. That way you will be able to prosper, too.

“Your discipline is that you will be in Babylon for 70 years. After that, I will come and do all the good things for you that I promised. I will bring you home again! I know the Real plans I have made for you — the BIG, BIG, BIG plans. They are plans for your GOOD, not for your harm. They are plans to give you HOPE and a FUTURE. And when you call out to Me, I will listen. If you look for Me with all of your heart, you will find Me. You will find Me! Your time of discipline will come to an end, and I will build, build, build you up. I will bring you back home to the special city, Zion, which I have made for you.”
