Eutychus : The Young Man Who Fell Out of a Window

Eutychus lived in a city called Troas, that was near the sea. He lived with people who had heard about Jesus and wanted to obey Him. One day, Paul and Luke and several other men came to visit them for a week.

When it was time for Paul to leave, everyone was together in an upstairs room. Since Paul was going to leave the next morning, they had a lot they wanted to learn about together. They talked and talked and talked about the Good News of Jesus. They talked for a long time.

The room was full of people. Standing squished together. Sitting on the floor. Leaning against the wall.

A young man named Eutychus was sitting on the opening of a window, using it like a little bench. He was swinging his legs because they were starting to hurt, but he didn’t complain. He really wanted to hear more, more, more about Jesus.

Soon it was getting late, and Eutychus was starting to feel a little hungry. But everyone was still talking together, and he leaned forward. He really wanted to hear more, more, more about Jesus.

Soon it was dark outside, and Eutychus was starting to feel sleepy. He jumped up and helped light the lamps in the room so everyone could still see. He really wanted to keep hearing more and more and more about Jesus.

Soon it was bedtime, and Eutychus was really sleepy now. He rubbed his eyes, he stretched his legs, and he tried to sit up straight. He really wanted to keep hearing more, more, more about Jesus.

Soon it was the middle of the night, and Eutychus was sleepier than ever. He wasn’t sure what to do, but he did not want to fall asleep! He really, really wanted to keep hearing more, more, more about Jesus.

Paul was still talking. So Eutychus listened and listened and listened... until... his eyes fluttered closed. His shoulders slumped. His head dropped. He was really sleeping now. He started leaning, leaning, leaning, until... whoosh, thud! He fell right out of the window. Down, down, down he fell onto the street right outside the house.

Now the window was very high up, and everyone rushed down the stairs to him. He wasn’t speaking, he wasn’t breathing, and his heart wasn’t beating. Eutychus had fallen so far down that he had died.

“Help! Help! Where’s Paul? Where’s Paul?”

Paul came running over to Eutychus, and he THREW himself on top of Eutychus and put his arms tight around him.

And guess what? Eutychus was suddenly alive again! Eutychus opened his eyes and he heard Paul’s voice. “Don’t worry!” Paul said to the others. “He’s alive.” And Paul smiled a big smile at him.

Do you know what they did next? They all went back upstairs to talk more, more, more about Jesus. They broke bread together and kept talking together all through the rest of the night!

Eutychus did not fall asleep again. He kept listening more, more, more until finally the sun came up, and it was time for Paul to leave. Eutychus hugged Paul and said a very special goodbye (with an extra little wink).
