Elijah : The Man Who Heard God in the Whisper

Elijah was hiding. He was scared. So he told God, “I’m scared, God! The Israelites all disobey. I am the only one left who obeys You. And now everyone wants to hurt me because I obey You.”

God answered Elijah, “Go out and stand on the mountain. I am about to pass by.”

As Elijah waited in the cave on the mountain, a big wind came and blew on the mountain. Whooosh. Whoooooooooosh.

But Elijah could tell the Lord was not in that wind. So, he kept listening, listening, listening.

After the wind, there was an earthquake — the whole mountain shook! Boom, Bang, Crash.

But Elijah could tell the Lord was not in that earthquake. So, he kept listening, listening, listening.

After the earthquake, there was a fire. Crackle, Boom, Whoooo!!

But Elijah could tell the Lord was not in that fire. So, he kept listening, listening, listening.

After the fire, Elijah heard a gentle, gentle whisper… and Elijah recognized that God was in that whisper, so he came out of the cave.

Think about it…

Let’s think about this for a minute. Do you think Elijah would have heard God’s whisper if he had been talking or playing loudly, or in some other part of the cave just doing his own thing? Probably not! He knew he had to pay close attention if he was going to hear God’s words. So remember, learning HOW to whisper and how to LISTEN for a whisper is important. Now you can go back to the story…

“Elijah… Elijah,” the Lord whispered, “why are you here?”

“I’m scared, God!” Elijah answered. “The Israelites all disobey. I am the only one left who obeys You, Lord. And now everyone wants to hurt me because I obey You.”

“Shhhhhhhh, settle down… I hear you, and I have a plan,” God whispered. “And do you know what? I still have seven thousand servants who obey Me. You are not the only one. But, don’t worry. I will keep you safe. I have a few more things for you to do, so follow My plan and finish well.”
