Has your mom or dad ever had to tell you to “Shhhh… Be quiet” or “Sit Still”? Did you know that one time Jesus told a storm to be quiet and still?
Jesus and His disciples were hard workers. They kept very busy talking to people about the Kingdom of Heaven.
One day Jesus needed a little rest and He said to His disciples, “Hey, let’s go over to the other side of the lake.” So they hopped into a boat and set out across the lake.
As they sailed, Jesus went to the back of the boat and curled up on a cushion and fell fast asleep. Zzzzzzz… Zzzzzzz…
Then, all of a sudden, a furious storm started raging. Rain was pouring down and the tall waves were splash, splash, splashing over into the boat. The boat was being tossed up and down, up and down with the crashing waves. And the boat was getting full of water.
Do you know what happens when a boat fills up with water? It sinks! The disciples were afraid, afraid, afraid.
But, do you know what Jesus was doing? There He was just peacefully sleep, sleep, sleeping in the back of the boat. Zzzzzzz… Zzzzzzz…
Was Jesus panicked? Was Jesus afraid? No, He was rest, rest, resting.
The disciples went to Jesus and woke Him up, saying, “Lord, save us! HELP! Don’t You care that our boat is going to sink! We’re going to drown!? Help us!!!”
Jesus rubbed His sleepy eyes and said, “Why are you so afraid?”
Then Jesus got up and He scolded the wind and the waves. He said to the wind, “Be quiet!” And to the tall waves splashing over into the boat, He said, “Be still!”
And, of course, the wind and the waves obeyed and got completely still and quiet. (Just like you obey when your moms and dads ask you to be still and quiet.)
Jesus asked His disciples, “Why were you so afraid? Do you still have no faith? Where is your trust in Me and My Father?”
Jesus knew they needed to See with Heaven-Eyes just like He did! That loud, windy, rainy storm was no big deal. He knew that storm wasn’t going to hurt them because they had more work, work, work to do telling people about God’s Kingdom.
And, if the disciples had seen that storm really was going to hurt them, then they could have just told that storm to “Be quiet. Be still,” just like Jesus did. In fact, that would have been nice if they had, because then Jesus could have finished His nap. Zzzzzzz…
